Garden Route

A road that leaves you wanting to live a little more slowly

OceanThe roadFreedom
The Garden Route is not a checklist of sights but a way of travelling. The kind where the road becomes part of the experience rather than the logistics between points. There is no race here. There is the ocean, which changes from Hermanus to Wilderness — from whale spouts to calm estuaries. There are small towns where time runs differently: Gansbaai with the harsh energy of its coast, Stanford with its wine estates, Swellendam with the history of another South Africa. And there are the dunes, where you grasp the scale of things — whether you walk them or tear across them in a jeep. And then there is the finale on the water — when you pass the exam for a temporary skipper's licence, take the houseboat out into the Knysna lagoon, and fall asleep to the sound of it. The format suits a family, a couple or friends, and it is assembled around the rhythm you choose: with a guide from our team, or self-driving an agreed route.

Format

Duration: 6 days / 5 nights
For whom: solo / a couple / a family / friends
Itinerary: Cape Town → Hermanus → Gansbaai → Swellendam → Wilderness → Knysna → Cape Town
Season: all year round (whales: June–November)

For whale watching in Hermanus the best months are August to October. Without whales the route works just as well, simply with a different emphasis.

Hermanus in whale season: a shore where the sea puts on a show

Gansbaai, Stanford, Sedgefield — small stops with none of the tourist bustle

The dunes: on foot, or the jeep version across the sand

Swellendam: a historic town as a pause in the road

Kayaks on the Kaaimans River: water, quiet, a little effort

Paragliding at Wilderness: this estuary has to be seen from above

Knysna: the seafaring spirit, and a night on a houseboat

Day 1 · Ocean and dunes
Morning

Leaving Cape Town

The city and its noise fall away, new places appear, and the journey starts to feel like one. The road runs along the coast.

Hermanus

In whale season, a walk along the ocean looking for spouts. Out of season, a beautiful coastal town with good restaurants.

Gansbaai / Stanford

A change of rhythm, a harsher sea and a different coastal energy. Stanford is for those who value wine and quiet.

The dunes

A walk across endless sand, or the jeep version, to feel the thrill and the spirit of the place.

Evening

A night near Gansbaai

A comfortable place to stay with a view of the ocean.

Day 2 · History and water
Morning

The road through Swellendam

A historical pause, to see "the other South Africa". One of the oldest towns in the country, and Cape Dutch architecture.

Kaaimans River — kayaks

A kayak adventure through the gorge to the waterfall. An unhurried pace of exploring, water and quiet.

Evening

A night at Wilderness

Accommodation surrounded by nature. Wilderness is about singular estuaries and calm.

Day 3 · Wilderness and Knysna
Morning

Breakfast and a walk

Morning at Wilderness: breakfast, a walk along the Indian Ocean. Optionally, paragliding over the estuary.

On to Knysna

A short drive to a port town with a seafaring spirit all its own.

The skipper's exam

Sitting the exam for a temporary skipper's licence — we send the study material in advance. It is part of the adventure.

Evening

Houseboat on the lagoon

Taking the houseboat out. An evening on the lagoon and a night on the water. That particular feeling of freedom, with water and silence all around.

Days 4–6 — An unhurried return
Morning

Morning on the water

No rush. Breakfast on board, a last look at the lagoon.

Back to Cape Town

The return follows a pace agreed in advance. We can visit a few more great places on the way home.

A note from the author

Founder

I have explored the Garden Route many times, and every time it opens up differently. I think the experience here is the road itself. We are not driving from A to B. The route becomes part of your life as you go. Which is why I suggest not hurrying, stopping on impulse, and letting yourself simply live the moment. Exactly like a road trip in a film.

Who it suits

If you want a road trip without the race and the overload
If you want a journey that feels like a small life of its own
If you are travelling as a family and looking for plenty of nature, small pleasures and changing places
We suggest going into this intending to slow down, and to notice what is around you and who is beside you

Who it does not suit

you need a rigid schedule
you want to get the route done quickly
long stretches on the road are hard for you
the slow travel format does not appeal to you
you need a constant urban rhythm

Why it is rare

The Garden Route is one of the best-known road trips in the world. But most people drive it far too fast. The real meaning of this journey only opens up once you stop treating it as a route and start living inside the road. Which is why every one of these road trips turns out completely different.

What you should know

  • The route is comfortable but full: better not to speed it up, and to leave air between the points
  • The temporary skipper's exam and the houseboat need about an hour of preparation — we send the material in advance

  • No more than three hours of driving a day. The road is part of the pleasure, but it should not wear you out
