The Limpopo you imagined as a child, and maybe better

Ancient forestPrivate safariAvocado farmHoward
Together with Howard — farmer, poet, entrepreneur and one of the most unusual characters in South Africa — we uncover the mysteries of Limpopo. He has his own ancient rainforest. Avocado, dragonfruit and macadamia farms. His own safari lodge in the middle of the savannah. This experience is built around the contrast between two worlds of nature: the green, humid Limpopo and the wild savannah of the Greater Kruger.

The ancient forest of Limpopo

The journey begins early in the morning with a walk through one of the last ancient forests of Limpopo — a forest barely touched by people across thousands of years. This is an entirely different Africa. Humid. Green. Alive. Enormous trees everywhere, some of them more than two thousand years old, dense growth, and animal tracks. After the walk we head to Howard's farm, where avocado, dragonfruit, citrus and macadamia grow. You can taste everything on the spot and spend time with Howard himself — a man who is simultaneously a farmer, a businessman, the founder of his own agricultural university, a crypto investor and a poet. You can talk to him about anything: South Africa, business, land, farming, or simply life. A living legend.

Crossing into the savannah

In the afternoon the landscape changes sharply. Green Limpopo gradually becomes the savannah of the Timbavati, one of the richest wildlife regions in the Greater Kruger. A completely different experience starts here. Your safari lodge is entirely private. Only you. Your ranger. Your vehicle. Your rhythm. No other tourists. This is one of the defining features of the experience — nothing about it feels like a mass-market safari.

Safari without limits

Everything from here follows the animals and your own state. Early drives. Sunsets over the savannah. Night safaris. A bush walk. Your ranger can read animal tracks, knows their habits, and helps you understand the world of the savannah more deeply. Some days lunch can be laid out in the middle of the bush. Fire. Darkness. The sound of animals around you. And the complete sense that this world doesn't belong to people.

Settling into nature

This experience lasts four days and three nights. The first day is usually the fuller one. After that the slowing down begins. You stop living by the clock and start living by the rhythm of nature: sunrises, heat, sunsets and the movement of animals. That's when Limpopo begins to feel like itself.

Characters

Howard

farmer, poet, entrepreneur

One of the most unusual characters in South Africa. Simultaneously a farmer, a businessman, the founder of his own agricultural university, a crypto investor and a poet. When the press asked him to comment on Trump's programme for relocating South African farmers to the United States, he answered: "There is no better place in the world than the South Africa I love."

A note from the author

Konstantin

Founder

Plenty of people offer safari experiences, but they all come with a mass of rules, and those rules always grated on me personally. I wanted maximum privacy and the ability to make my own decisions. The real thrill comes when you aren't running to someone else's schedule but building your own, by feel. I suggest going out on safari deep in the night, at least once. Other lodges usually won't allow that. You have your own lodge, your own ranger, your own chef, your own guide and your own vehicle. All of it is at your disposal.

Not for you if…

you need a rigid plan and a fixed schedule
you want a quick one-day safari
going deep into nature doesn't interest you
you find it hard to slow down
you need an urban rhythm and constant stimulation

Why it is rare

Fully private safari lodges of this standard are extremely rare. Most safaris in South Africa are built around volume tourism. Here the whole rhythm and format bend to you alone. Beyond that, the ancient forests of Limpopo are gradually disappearing, and so is the old Afrikaner farming way of life.
