The journey begins with a scheduled commercial flight from Johannesburg to Eswatini. Eswatini still lives inside a very strong traditional system. So it feels less like arriving in another country than arriving in another era.
The heart of the experience is Umhlanga, the famous Reed Dance. Thousands of young women from across the country come together to take part in an ancient ritual before the king. For local people it is a fundamental part of cultural and national identity. And there are still very few tourists here. This isn't staged, and it isn't an African show.
During the experience you have the chance to get inside the royal palace. Very few people are given that access. In the entire country only a handful of guides hold official permission to accompany guests inside royal events. We work with one of them. Beyond the festival itself, you come to understand how life works inside the last absolute monarchy in Africa.
On the second day we explore the calmer side of the country. Traditional villages and the capital. You can visit markets, craft workshops and natural sites, or simply watch the very slow rhythm of life here.

When I saw the king arrive in a pink Rolls-Royce for a ceremony at which forty thousand young women would dance before him for hours, it left me with a great deal to think about. This is an experience for people who enjoy politics, culture and big questions.

Not for you if…
Why it is rare
Umhlanga takes place on only one day a year. Eswatini remains one of the most closed and unusual countries in Africa. That's why you can't have this experience anywhere else in the world.
